Explore Kommetjie on foot or two wheels

Discover the beauty of Cape Town and its surrounds on spectacular hikes or from atop a mountain bike

Winter’s over at last and spring is officially here! With sunshine aplenty, it’s the perfect time to hit the beach and soak up some sun, sea and sand in style. Base yourself at Fin Whale Beach House in the small coastal village of Kommetjie, just half an hour from the hustle and bustle of Cape Town, surrounded by some of the most picturesque scenery the Cape has to offer.

From the magnificent Chapman’s Peak that frames the end of Kommetjie’s immaculate Long Beach to the surrounding hillsides dotted with rare and endemic species of fynbos, this is a true coastal paradise, fringed by white sands and the sparkling but chilly waters of the southern reaches of the Atlantic ocean.

Our beautiful beach house is designed to encourage absolute relaxation and fun for the whole family, with four fabulous bedrooms and all the amenities families and friends could wish for, from a sparkling pool to a fully equipped, state-of-the-art kitchen. And the beach is literally just a step down from the back door… What more could you ask for?

Hike or bike…

If you really want to experience the dramatic landscapes around Kommetjie and Fin Whale Beach House, the best way to do so is on foot, or even on a mountain bike! There are some incredible hikes and mountain bike trails in the mountains around Chapman’s peak, as well as the iconic Table Mountain itself and the famous 12 Apostles – the 12 mountain peaks that tower over the Atlantic seaboard from Kloof Neck (the “saddle” between Table Mountain and Lion’s Head) all the way up to Hout Bay.

This is one of the most scenic stretches of coastline in the world and just a stone’s throw from Fin Whale Beach House, so don’t forget to bring your walking shoes, mountain bike, sunscreen, hat and water bottles and head out for the day with a picnic lunch.

Feel free to bring your own bikes with you if you are travelling down by car, or ask us about hiring bikes for the duration of your stay.

The views are incredible and you’ll get a whole new appreciation of this part of South Africa’s Western Cape as well as enjoying huge amounts of fresh air!

Horseriding is also available close by and gives you yet another way to discover the magic of the landscapes around us.

Of course, with the gorgeous Long Beach on your doorstep, you don’t have to go far to explore! Walks along our beach are a fantastic way to both start and end the day here at Fin Whale Beach House, along with toasting the setting sun with a fine, South African wine from the dunes in front of the house.

At the end of the day, with a crayfish grilling on the braai and the craft gin flowing, surrounded by family and friends, summer is the perfect season to be at the beach and living the beachside lifestyle.

Once you’ve spent a few days exploring, why not take it up a notch and pay a visit to the bustling and vibrant Mother City itself? Cape Town is within easy distance and well worth spending time in.

What to do in Cape Town

A visit to the amazing Two Oceans Aquarium at the Victoria and Alfred (V&A) Waterfront is an absolute must. This world-class aquarium is renowned for its incredible displays and interactive exhibits – you can even arrange to dive with ragged tooth sharks while you are there! While at the V&A you can explore its amazing variety of shops and restaurants, and take a water-taxi across the harbour (watch out for the “seals on wheels”!) There are also amazing views out over Table Bay. The V&A is also the departure point for the tours to Robben Island, which can be seen in the distance across the bay.

You can also explore the wonderful Company’s Garden in the heart of the city. Located at the back of Parliament and the President’s official residence, Tuynhuys, the gardens offer amazing views of Table Mountain and is home to the South African Museum, Planetarium and South African Art Gallery, as well as a lovely restaurant. It’s the oldest garden in the country and has its origins in Jan van Riebeeck’s vegetable patch, which was grown to feed the original colony in 1652.

Of course, Table Mountain itself is a major attraction and you can choose to either climb it (there’s a good route from Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens) or ascend via the cableway (truly spectacular). The views from the top of this global icon are incredible, so be sure to take a camera and give yourself lots of time to explore.

So get in touch and we hope to see you soon!
