Well, here at Fin Whale Beach House we’ve put a lot of effort into making sure you’re going to be pampered indoors and out, with luxurious facilities and sumptuous furnishings.

It all starts in our four en-suite bedrooms… Getting a good night’s sleep is always important when you are on vacation, and it’s something that we rate very highly here at Fin Whale Beach House! So we’ve gone the extra mile to make sure that slumbering peacefully is a peace of cake. All of our bedrooms are designed to make your stay with us a truly memorable experience – and a restful one too!

We’ve gone to great lengths to make our beds an adventure in their own right, with wonderfully soft cotton linens, plush feather pillows, fluffy duvets and sensuous throws! Sleeping was never made easier and relaxation is guaranteed!

Indeed, when it comes to relaxation, we want you to think of Fin Whale Beach House as your home from home. Curl up on the couch with a good book, kick your shoes off and take a nap next to the pool, take a bottle of wine down to the beach, lay back on the soft sand and soak up the ocean breeze and sound of the waves… Or get in some snacks and a few drinks and plonk yourself down in front of the latest soccer game on TV! You can pack up a picnic, grab a couple of blankets and a fully stocked cooler box and spend the day exploring Kommetjie’s Long Beach which is literally on our doorstep.

Alternatively, spend the day at “home” and enjoy the views! Fin Whale Beach House is not exactly lacking in the impressive landscape department, with views over the ocean, Hout Bay and the towering Chapman’s Peak.

The ocean off Kommetjie Beach is a thriving marine environment. From southern right whales, Cape fur seals, African penguins and even the occasional orca, guests are spoiled for choice when it comes to a marine safari. There are regular boat cruises in the area offering you the chance to see some of the amazing birds and animals that make the sea their home.

And if you’re brave enough to face the ocean’s apex predator, you can take the plunge and go shark cage diving, where you will learn about the incredible great white shark and the role it plays in the ocean’s fragile marine eco-systems. These incredible fish are magnificent to behold in their natural environment and a far cry from the menacing killers portrayed in the movie “Jaws”.

Back on dry land, the entire Cape Peninsula is home to some of the most amazing endemic plants you can find in the world. This spectacular environment that surrounds Fin Whale Beach House and ranges across the peninsula is known locally as “Fynbos” – literally meaning fine bush. Made up of rare and endemic species, Fynbos contributes to the Cape Floral Kingdom – the smallest and most biodiverse of the world’s six floral kingdoms found entirely within South Africa and boasting more than 9000 species!

A short drive from Kommetjie will take you to Cape Town and probably the most famous peak in the world – Table Mountain. Towering over South Africa’s Mother City, it’s become a global icon for its unique flat top and sensational views over the city and its surrounds. One of the best ways to experience it is to take the cable car to the top and spend some time exploring its unique eco-system, taking lots of pictures as you go. Alternatively you can climb it, if you’re feeling energetic!

While in Cape Town, check out the magical suburb of Bo Kaap, where the houses have been painted in bright colours. It’s one of the most distinctive neighbourhoods and its history reaches back to the 1760s when it was known as the Malay Quarter and featured rental houses that were leased to Malay slaves, known as the Cape Malays. In those days the houses had to be kept white, but when the rule was lifted and the Malays got their freedom, and the chance to buy their homes, they painted them in bright colours as an expression of their liberation.

For some added flavour to all this colour, a short drive along the coast from Cape Town takes you to the fabulous Cape Winelands tourism route, where you can visit some of South Africa’s leading wine farms and sample some the finest vintages in the world. The town of Stellenbosch is the de facto capital of the Winelands and the perfect place to spend time exploring and learning all about the fine art of turning grapes into wine, as well as some of South Africa’s fascinating history.

Relax in barefoot luxury here in Kommetjie, not far from Cape Town, where the biggest attraction – the Atlantic Ocean – crashes onto soft white sand just metres from your back door…

The pull of the ocean is incredible. It’s beautiful to look at for hours on end with its mood constantly changing and its allure impossible to describe. It’s also a fantastic playground, so when you come and stay with us here at Fin Whale Beach House, be prepared to take the plunge, literally and figuratively, with a range of exciting watersports and ocean activities.

Kommetjie is renowned for its surfing and has some of the best surf action in and around Cape Town. Long Beach offers the chance to enjoy this wonderful sport as a seasoned surfer or a novice. With surf schools on your doorstep, you can take the opportunity to learn how to surf from scratch and make the best of your time at the beach. 

Staying in a beach house just a few steps from an incredible beach also allows you to maximise the time you spend with the sand between your toes and in the sea itself. Try out kitesurfing, boogie boarding or scuba diving in the kelp forests. You’ll need a pretty thick wetsuit to stay warm, as the ocean is rather chilly, but these can be hired from dive and surf operators in Kommetjie. Or bring your own if you have one!

Staying so close to Cape Town also has its perks as you can indulge in a range of amazing ocean-based tours, from taking a boat out to Robben Island to explore the prison where Nelson Mandela was held to boat trips to seal colonies in False Bay. Or take a boat taxi across Table Bay – the easiest way to get from one side of the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront development to the other. 

Back in Kommetjie, you can also take to the beach on horseback, with several horse trails operators offering wonderful rides along Long Beach all the way to neighbouring Noordhoek. Or just go for incredible long walks, discovering shipwreck remains along the way, or visit the Slangkop Lighthouse and enjoy the incredible views of Chapman’s Peak. 

Stretch out in the sun on the soft white sand and soak up some wonderful Vitamin D, or enjoy a wonderful glass of South African wine as the sun goes down, turning the sky into incredible shades of pink and orange. That’s the beauty of staying in your own, exclusive beach house – the choice is yours and everything beach-related is on the doorstep.

For hot days you can also relax around the swimming pool, cooling off without the need for a wetsuit! And enjoy a wonderful beach house braai (the South African vernacular for a barbecue), perhaps with some freshly caught crayfish? 

There’s so much to see and do at Fin Whale Beach House and in Kommetjie, you’ll literally be spoiled for choice. The bustling big city lights of Cape Town, with all of its attractions, is just a short drive away, as is the breathtakingly beautiful Cape Point. Spend a day in Cape Town exploring its tourism hotspots or going up Table Mountain. Or venture further afield to the Cape Winelands.

At the end of the day, return home to your fabulous beach house, make a bonfire on the beach and toast a fantastic holiday with family and friends.
