Cuddle up in Kommetjie

The perfect winter escape awaits

Enjoy roaring log fires and Kommetjie’s warm hospitality…

It may be cloudy and brooding outside, but here at Fin Whale Beach House the onset of winter means the chance to snuggle up with a bottle of fine South African wine in front of a roaring log fire with a group of great friends and family and just enjoy being together…

There’s little to beat a wonderful home on the beach filled with warmth and laughter on a sun-filled but chilly winter’s day. Here in Kommetjie in South Africa’s Western Cape our average daytime temperature in the winter months is around 20 deg C. It can get as warm as 24 deg C, but it can also plummet to the low to mid teens too!

Winter in South Africa officially kicks off on 1 June and lasts till spring arrives on 1 September! Our winters are generally mild and the climate here in Kommetjie is often compared to that of the Mediterranean, making it the perfect time for long walks on the beach, hiking and exploring the amazing landscapes around us and venturing out on day trips to nearby places of interest.

The house itself is built for entertaining and enjoying an indoor/outdoor lifestyle. Just steps from Long Beach, the views are spectacular and there’s lots of space to just relax and kick back and ease into the beach vibe of simple, barefoot luxury.

A covered braai area on a beautiful enclosed verandah makes it easy to cook up a storm even when storms prevail! The main lounge area with its open fireplace is perfect for cooler evenings and a pot belly stove in the corner of the kitchen makes it one of the best places in the house to gather for good food and great conversation!

And at the end of the day, as the sun begins to set, grabbing a bottle or two of bubbly, sticks and marshmallows and building a bonfire in the dunes is a wonderful way to experience the magic of beach life!

Fin Whale’s beautiful kitchen has been custom-designed with entertaining in mind. Its modern, open plan style and huge dining table make it a huge drawcard and the heart of this beautiful beach house. Self-catering is always made easy when you have a great kitchen at your disposal, equipped with the best appliances and thoughtfully laid out.

Outside, the stunning timber bar area adjacent to the sparkling swimming pool is also perfect for sundowners or just enjoying a cold beer or G&T on a warm, sunny day. When the glass doors are all opened, the covered verandah becomes a wonderfully shaded outdoor lounge area, with its farmstyle table and benches and comfy L-shaped couch. If you are in the market for superclone Replica Rolex , Super Clone Rolex is the place to go! The largest collection of fake Rolex watches online!

All of Fin Whale’s four bedrooms have their own bathrooms and can sleep up to eight people in style. The upstairs rooms have stunning views of the beach and distant Chapman’s Peak to boot.

So gather your friends and family around you, including your fur babies (Fin Whale Beach House is pet friendly) and come and visit us for a winter break here in Kommetjie. It’s just a short drive from Cape Town International Airport till you have your toes in the sand!

Kommetjie – the little town with a big heart!

Kommetjie – the little town with a big heart!

Unspoilt natural beauty = the ultimate escape!

Close to Cape Town but a world away from stress

When it comes to choosing a destination for the family to escape to, far from the madding crowds where you can escape the reality of every day life and relax in luxury and the majesty of mother nature, a beach holiday is usually very close to the top of the list!

Where beach holidays are concerned, you’d be hard-pressed to find anywhere better than the lovely little town of Kommetjie, steeped in history, sensational views and wonderful, welcoming hospitality.

Essentially a seaside village with beach houses that date back to the 1900s, Kommetjie is just 35km from Cape Town but a world away from the hubbub of urban existence.

In spite of being a trendy weekend escape for Capetonians and tourists from all over the world who come to the quaint town to experience its picturesque scenery and wonderful seaside community vibe, Kommetjie has managed to retain much of its rural appeal and residents here still regard themselves as living away from it all.

Nestling between Slangkop Mountain and the Atlantic Ocean, in one of the most beautiful and unspoilt settings on the Cape Peninsula, Kommetjie’s Long Beach is over 5km of white sand with waves that’s an important surfing and kite surfing centre with a reputation for crayfishing, between November and April.

Indeed, this is where the crayfish is truly king – otherwise known as the Cape rock lobster, crayfish is delicious when freshly caught and braaied (barbecued).

If you’ve not indulged in crayfish, check out our blog about this and other amazing seafood options together with our favourite recipe for preparing a crayfish feast for the senses!

Long Beach also has a protected tidal pool that’s perfect for kids and because of its size, the beach never feels crowded, even during peak holiday season.

Kommetjie is home to the Slangkoppunt Lighthouse – the country’s tallest cast-iron lighthouse that was built in 1919. From here a walkway takes you to “die kom” (which literally translates as “the bowl”) – the circular, bowl-like sea basin after which the town is named.

This natural basin forms a little harbour perfect for small boats, and is one of the best sites on land from which to view seabirds – Kommetjie features no less than three times in the Cape Bird Route and is an absolute delight for keen birders.

Kommetjie is self-sufficient but there is a shopping centre at Long Beach Mall, not even five kilometres away, en route to Fish Hoek along Kommetjie Road, which passes Imhoff Farm along the way – with its converted farm buildings providing a bakery, tea garden, craft shops, art studios and cheese dairy.

There are also camel and horse rides for children. Head off along Kommetjie Road in the other direction and you’ll reach the seaside town of Scarborough.

All of this is literally on your doorstep when you stay at Fin Whale Beach House, located in the Slangkop Estate with views of forever and steps from the powder-white sand of Long Beach. So please get in touch and let’s arrange your next seaside getaway!

Off to the beach for the holidays!

So where better to spend a few glorious days unwinding than in a luxurious house on the beach?

Enter Fin Whale Beach House in the lovely seaside village of Kommetjie, just half an hour’s drive from the hustle and bustle of Cape Town, South Africa’s Mother City. Framed by the legendary shape of Chapman’s Peak and the mountains of the Cape Peninsula, this is where the south Atlantic goes into mesmerising relaxation mode, with the sound of its waves breaking on the shores of the immaculate Long Beach guaranteed to banish anxiety in a jiffy.

There’s little to beat the ability to roll out of bed whenever you want and step straight onto powder-soft white sand for a casual stroll along one of the most picturesque beaches in South Africa. That’s what Fin Whale Beach House offers you – the chance to live a beach lifestyle, even if only for a few precious days. It’s barefoot luxury at its finest!

With four beautiful en-suite bedrooms, the house is big enough to host groups of family and friends but small enough to create an intimate, relaxed atmosphere all of its own, especially when a roaring log fire is lit in the spacious fireplace on a chilly evening and the meat on the braai is sizzling… This is where you gather to just enjoy life, forgetting all about work, school, the madness of the world and all of the irritations that life throws at you on a daily basis.

At Fin Whale Beach House you just get to “be” for a few days, living in the moment, enjoying the great outdoors and the wonderful healing power of nature on your doorstep while decompressing and re-evaluating your priorities. That’s the magic of the beach – it just clears the cobwebs in your mind, dusts off your soul and gets your body nice and rested and ready for anything!

Fun is a given when you’re staying in such a wonderful beach setting. And Kommetjie itself is renowned for the variety of things to see and do and places to visit, as well as activities to indulge in. Whether it’s learning to surf, boogie boarding or snorkelling the local kelp forests or hiking in the mountains, kayaking and indulging in wine tasting and sampling fresh seafood, you’ll never get bored in Kommetjie.

Kommetjie also has a rich history dating back to the turn of the 1900s and is well known for its wonderful indigenous fynbos and rich coastal environment. There are interesting shipwrecks to explore on Long Beach and a walk to Slangkop lighthouse is a must.
